Winter 2010 Holiday Workshops

Week 1

Tuesday 6th July | Kid’s Workshop with Valissa Price
For children aged 6-9 10:30am to 1:00pm
Cost: $20 members/ $25 non-members Students will work with Valissa using easy to master weaving techniques inspired by selected artworks by Ruth Waller, currently on display in the exhibition A Thirty Year Survey. Children will take home a wall hanging featuring natural fibres, yarns and fabric.


Wednesday 7th July | Pipsqueak with Vanessa Evans
For toddlers aged 2-5 & their parents or carers 10.30am to 11.30am
Cost: $8 members/ $10 non-members In this special workshop just for little ones, toddlers work together with their parents or carers. Inspired by Michelle Gearin and Tom Kearney’s current exhibition Nest, children will create their own drawings and build on them with collage. Includes games and guided exhibition tour.


Thursday 8th July | Teen’s Workshop with Michelle Brodie

For teen’s aged 13-18 10:30am to 1:00am
Cost: $30 members/ $35 non-members Using a range of kitsch advertising sources collected by artists Michelle Gearin and Tom Kearney for their current exhibition Nest, teens in this workshop will develop compositions of their own design on MDF. Workshop includes a range of printmaking, spray-can stencilling and collage techniques.


Friday 9th July | Kid’s Workshop with Suzannah Kersey

For children aged 9-13 10:30am to 1:00pm
Cost: $20 members/ $25 non-members In this fun, collage-based workshop, children will be intrigued by the current exhibition Breath and Stones by Annette Iggulden. Students will create multilayered works using paper, shellac and chinagraph pencil; and will use origami techniques to create small sculptures.

Week 2

Tuesday 13th July | Tween’s Workshop with Michelle Brodie
For children aged 9-13 10:30am to 1:00am
Cost: $20 members/ $25 non-members Inspired by the work of artists Michelle Gearin and Tom Kearney, students will work with vintage and new designs, patterns and materials to create paper dolls, an enduring children’s toy and pastime. Includes stencilling and printmaking techniques, and children will leave with their own paper dolls and clothes.


Thursday 15th July | Pipsqueak with Vanessa Evans
For toddlers aged 2-5 & their parents or carers 10.30am to 11.30am
Cost: $8 members/ $10 non-members Inspired by an artwork from the MRAG art collection, Man with a Case by Graham Fransella, children will develop life size body shapes on paper. Plus there’s a surprise – what’s in the case? Includes drama games and whatever the case may be….

Friday 16th July | Kid’s Workshop with Michelle Maartensz
For children aged 6-9 10:30am to 1:00pm
Cost: $20 members/ $25 non-members In this fun, hands on workshop, children design and create their own interactive artworks working with felt and fabric, and using simple stencilling techniques. Inspired by the current exhibition Nest by Tom Kearney and Michelle Gearin.

cost: $110 gallery members / $160 non members. all materials supplied
8 weeks of classes commencing may 6 and concluding june 24 2010.

the studio sessions for teens is an art class designed for teens. each term, the students are introduced to a range of mediums and processes showcased across the exhibitions on display, with a strong focus on drawing skills. students can build on the skills learnt at high school in a small group setting with access to real works of art.

for kids aged 2-5 and their parents or caregivers

wednesday mornings 10:30am - 11:30am
cost: $5 per child, or book a child in for all 6 sessions
and receive the 6th session free. parents attend free. in this workshop, little ones and their carers work together, but one carer can bring along 2-3 children and support the littlest one.

pipsqueak! is held fortnightly.
term 2 dates: 28 april, 12 may, 26 may, 9 june, 23 june 2010

pipsqueak! is a special art workshop just for little ones. children work with their parents or carers towards an artwork inspired by an artwork currently on display in the art gallery, or an artwork from the mrag collection. this workshop builds motor skills and creativity whilst encouraging bonding between adult and child. all materials are supplied.

this is a studio art group designed for teens. each term, students are introduced to a range of mediums and processes showcased across the exhibitions on display, with a strong focus on drawing skills. teen classes are facilitated by local emerging artists and are an effective way to develop the skills learnt at high school. <more>

the beautiful woodblock prints of salvatore zofrea, featured in the current exhibition days of summer, will inspire students in this workshop to create a range of prints using techniques such as monoprinting, foam printing and hand colouring. the workshop will take children step by step through the different stages of printmaking and kids will be amazed at what they can produce.

in this workshop, children will explore different ways of drawing that encourages their emerging drawing skills. inspired by artists currently on exhibition, and by natural and found objects around the gallery, students will explore different drawing mediums and techniques. by the end of this fun drawing-based workshop, students will have 2-3 resolved works to take home with them.

This school holidays, enjoy FREE children's events every Saturday and Sunday plus a range of other events throughout the week; come to one of three holiday workshops specially designed for children of different ages, or one of 2 special workshops with artist Jon Pryer to make a fur dog mask like the one in his exhibition! This spring holiday calendar is filled with talks, tours, performances and workshops not to be missed. Another great feature this holidays, The National Gallery of Australia's Wolfensohn Travelling Suitcases will be available for kids and their families every Saturday. The NGA's travelling suitcases allow children to respond to the natural impulse to touch and inspect works of art, allowing them to experience the full measure of artworks.

mixed bag drawing challenge

mixed bag is a drawing challenge for high school aged students that aims to encourage better drawing skills. it is held in the style of a life drawing class and directed by artists who will assist teenagers to develop and hone their skills. as for the subject matter – students could be sketching anything from an elvis impersonator to a classic 1969 fairlane!! you could win a 16G Ipod nano!! generously donated by Dick Smith Maitland. <click here for more info>

These workshops are timed in the last 2 weeks of the school holidays, when the christmas presents and holiday period is over and done with. Get the kids out of your hair for a while and let them enjoy themselves at our fun and interesting school holiday workshops.

Pipsqueak! 2009

maitland regional art gallery is running a special pilot program at all 4 maitland libraries during january. the art workshop program, called pipsqueak! will feature as a children and families exhibition tour program in the new mrag. pipsqueak! is a special program created for kids up to six years of age. in this special program for little ones, kids work together with their carers, parents or grandparent, and learn about selected artworks from mrag’s collection. during the january school holidays, our focus will be on birds, and children can create their own quirky, cute and colourful kid-sized wings before flying away home. all materials are provided. call the corresponding library to book your place.
