egg face 2007
an mrag education initiative in connection with maitland regional art gallery’s exhibition program

In conjunction with the Joe Furlonger and Robert Callander circus themed exhibitions, MRAG Education is proud to present egg face: an exhibition of signature clown faces created by Hunter pre-school students. In the tradition of clowning, professional clowns in Europe and America render their one-of-a-kind clown face design onto an egg in order to preserve its copyright. According to clown legend these ‘egg faces’ are stored in bank vaults in order that no two clowns ever look alike.

mrag education’s egg face is an exhibition of over two hundred copyrighted clown faces by 2-5 year olds from Maitland Nursery, Chelmsford Drive Early Learning Centre, Shamrock Hills Learning Centre, East Maitland Pre-school Brunswick Street and East Maitland Pre-school George Street. egg face is aligned with MRAG Education’s objective of taking kids art off the fridge door and bringing it into the art gallery.

During the course of the exhibition audiences of all ages are invited to create their own egg face to add to the growing exhibition. Simply dream up your one-of-a-kind clown face and bring it to life at one of our activity tables. Ask one of the gallery staff to photograph your egg face and see it added to the exhibition.

a maitland regional art gallery education project

Throughout June and July 2007 video and new media artist Theresa Schubert worked with three hundred 9-12 year olds from Kitchener, Williamtown, Congewai, Greta, Murrurundi and Telarah Public Schools in a free Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) Education Program. This program was devised to support ‘ Wanderlust’ a traveling exhibition of Artists’ books by Adelaide artists Alexander Arcus and Liz Jeneid.

Wanderlust was exhibited at MRAG Throughout July and August 2007. Like the Wanderlust artists, the students documented their own everyday travels through drawings, maps, diary entries and recorded interviews. These works have been collated and animated by Theresa Schubert in an interactive video installation entitled Maps, Minds & Places.
